The Mekong Delta in southern Vietnam is a vast maze of rivers, swamps and islands, home to floating markets, Khmer pagodas and villages surrounded by rice paddies. Boats are the main means of transportation, and tours of the region often start in nearby Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) or Can Tho, a bustling town in the heart of the delta.
Can Tho features the ornate Ong Chinese temple, while the town of Tra Vinh is known for its Khmer pagodas. Throughout the Delta, farmers and fishermen sell local produce from flat-bottomed sampan boats in colorful floating markets such as Cái Răng, Cái Bè and Phong Điền. The Mekong is also a biological haven for rare species like the Mekong giant catfish and Sarus crane, found at Tràm Chim National Park. In the north is Sam Mountain, a Buddhist religious site with views over the floodplains.
Mỹ Tho is the capital city, center of economics, education and technology of Tiền Giang Province, located in the Mekong Delta region of South Vietnam.
Bến Tre is the capital city of Bến Tre Province, in the Mekong Delta area of southern Vietnam.
Vĩnh Long is a city and the capital of Vĩnh Long Province in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta.
Can Tho is a city in southern Vietnam’s Mekong Delta region. Set on the southern bank of the Hau River, it’s known for its canal network and nearby floating markets. The modern 2.75-km cable-stayed Can Tho Bridge spans the river. The busy Ninh Kieu waterfront is a hub for boat trips on surrounding waterways. Illuminated at night, Can Tho’s waterfront is home to floating restaurants, bars and hotels.
