  14. I miss Australia, actually so hard to get used to Europe again after living there. The real land of opportunity, not the us.

    It's also hard to live around people who don't share your desire to do more in life. Everyone just seems okay with the routine.

  25. Good for him, but it takes a particular kind of person to put up with all that. There are safety concerns with women, as mentioned, and with things like couchsurfing you're still someone's guest and have to behave accordingly. Also, it helps tremendously for this to be extroverted, and some people just aren't and would feel overloaded by all the socializing. And let's face it, many of the work-your-way-around-the-world jobs are there because locals don't want to do them. Once you get out of your 20s your motivation to do that stuff starts to drop.

    My own approach was in my early 30s and DID require about $60/day all-in and involved gaming the frequent flyer system (when you could do that), aiming for about $20 on the best lodgings for that, and favoring cheaper countries like Thailand and Indonesia. It kept me out of the jobs and let me do the other interactions on my terms. No doubt it was not quite as close to the local experience as what was described here, but I can't emphasize enough that that kind of thing is not for everyone and introverts in particular may find it does not work for them.
